About the WBE
What is the Wheelchair Basketball experience?
The Wheelchair Basketball Experience is a fully equipped mobile coaching
and teaching unit, delivered by Gordon Perry, GB Team Member 1982 - 1991
and National Development Officer for Wheelchair Basketball from 1991 to
2006. The Wheelchair Basketball Experience carries on board 12 top-of-the-
range RGK Sportschairs, to enable students to experience the sport of
wheelchair basketball.
How can the Wheelchair Basketball Experience help you?
It can raise your students' awareness and experience of disability issues in
a practical and fun way. Gordon has sixteen years experience of:
- Delivering workshops to A-Level and GCSE students
- Delivering awareness sessions for groups ranging from 20 students to a whole year group
- Providing summer school activities for targeted groups
- Running sports day competitions
The WBE offers:
- A reliable, experienced and knowledgeable coach to run a session that is tailored to suit you and your students' needs.
- An enjoyable, memorable and instuctive experience for your students.
- To bring the right equipment to you - you just provide the hall and the hoops (and the participants!)
- Information packs for students and teachers
An example of a session planned for a GCSE PE group
- Introduction to wheelchair basketball; a brief history of the sport; the make-up of the national leagues and status of international standings.
- Explanation of the classification system used; how it allows all disabilities and able-bodied players to compete together.
- Introduction to basic chairs skills; a chance for all students to learn how to push, travel, pass nd shoot the ball.
- Short matches; a chance to experience the excitement of wheelchair basketball.
The overall message of the sessions is to assist able-bodied students in the understanding of the sport, the people who play, the skills that are required, that we play to the same court size, the same height baskets and that we follow the rules of the running game as much as possible. Hopefully, the students will benefit from this and have abetter understanding of disability and how people with disabilities can compete in sport at a high level.
